Melbourne – St Kilda Esplanade Market and Beach

St Kilda is a beach community just South of Melbourne. Every Sunday there is a market on the St Kilda Esplanade, just above the beach. On a recent visit to Melbourne I made it my goal to visit several of the markets in and around Melbourne. The St Kilda Esplanade Market was my fourth stop.

This is an Art and Craft Makers’ Market that has been in this location since 1970. The St Kilda Esplanade Market is well worth a visit, both for it’s artisan goods and it’s proximity to a lovely beach. While there are a few food trucks on hand don’t expect to find any produce, meat or seafood stalls here.

It’s just a short walk down to the beach. You even get to walk past Luna Park, a fun looking amusement park!

I’m not a big fan of sand, so I was really happy to see the wood and cement pathways where I could walk or sit and enjoy the beach without getting covered in sand. But if you like that kind of thing there is plenty of lovely sandy areas too! It wasn’t crowded on the day that I was there because it rained off and on all day but on a beautiful sunny day this beach can get pretty crowded.

I found an amazing restaurant on the beach called Captain Baxter. It describes itself as “Pan Asian Meets Melbourne Modern”. The miso waffle with smoked salmon and yuzu cream was one of the best “snacks” I’ve ever had (and so photogenic too)!

Another really good reason to visit St Kilda Beach is the penguins!
Apparently, a colony of 1400 penguins live at the breakwater at the St Kilda Pier.
The best time to see the penguins is just after sunset, but I was lucky enough to see this little guy during my daytime visit!
You can read more about the little penguins here

There is a conservation area/viewing boardwalk at the end of the pier. The pier and boardwalk both offer amazing views of the Melbourne skyline.
Although this post ended up being more about St Kilda Beach than about the St Kilda Esplanade Market, the market is definitely worth a visit if you are here on a Sunday. The beach, however, is worth visiting at any time!
