Melbourne – South Melbourne Market

On a recent visit to Melbourne I made it my goal to visit several of the markets in and around Melbourne. I wasn’t planning to go to South Melbourne Market since I had been there with my husband just a few months earlier, in July 2024, and had plenty of pictures from that visit. But, as I was heading to the Gasworks Farmer’s Market in Albert Park, I took a wrong turn. By the time I realized it, I was closer to South Melbourne Market than I was to Gasworks Park. (I later realized that the Gasworks Farmer’s Market is only on the 3rd Saturday of the month and this was the 1st Saturday, so maybe my feet knew what they were doing!)

South Melbourne is a foodie lovers paradise just South of the Central Business District. It is only a 38 minute walk from the cruise terminal or a 19 minute tram ride. The market is open Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

There was an extensive selection of meat and poultry and the fish and seafood vendors had some of the best selection I’ve ever seen.

The ready to eat seafood options were outstanding! There are standing tables running down the center of the seafood hall with a variety of sauces for the ready to eat goodies.

But seafood isn’t the only ready to eat option! There is a Food Hall with lots of vendors selling pasta, sandwiches, global foods, anything you might want to grab for lunch or take home for an easy dinner. There are also eating establishments encircling the market if you want a table service meal.

The flowers were gorgeous! Seeing them made me wish I was in Melbourne for longer than a week so I could buy some to enjoy at home!

Like any market, South Melbourne Market has an incredible variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, but the way they were displayed seemed to be more artistic than a lot of the markets I’ve visited.

My personal favorite vendor in the market is Agathe, a French Patisserie with one of the most incredible croissants I’ve ever eaten (but more on that in an upcoming post)…
My only complaint with this market is the lack of general seating. Nearly all of the seating at this market is tied to specific eating establishments. The only general seating is outside the market with the sun beating down or a very small space in the food hall. But that being said, this is a great market to visit if you are in Melbourne. You definitely won’t leave hungry!
