Melbourne – Prahran Market

On a recent visit to Melbourne I made it my goal to visit several of the markets in and around Melbourne. My second stop was the Prahran Market.

Prahran is a neighborhood market in South Yarra. Although this is less of a tourist destination than the Queen Victoria Market, it was also established during the Victorian era and is billed as Melbourne’s oldest market.
By it’s own description, Prahran Market “constantly strives to achieve an atmosphere of ‘food theatre’ throughout the Market, introducing new and interesting traders, visible preparation areas and spaces where shoppers can sit, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a bite to eat and something delicious to drink.” I visited the market on a Friday and it wasn’t too crowded, but they were filming a market cooking class at one of the vendor stand. (silly me, I didn’t take a picture!). The market offers a Market Discovery tour from 9:45-11am on the 3rd Saturday of every month.
The market can be easily accessed via train, tram. bus or car.
I was lucky enough to be staying walking distance. My 30 minute walk included this beautiful park trail!

The meat and fish hall is only this one aisle, but there are multiple vendors and a large selection of meat, poultry, fish and seafood to choose from.

In addition to the produce and flowers, this market had some of the best looking ready-to-eat food!

If I lived in South Yarra or St Kilda this would definitely be my go-to market!
