Melbourne – Queen Victoria Market

Melbourne, Australia is known as the culinary capital of Australia and is often called the “coffee capital of the world”. As a self-described foodie, Melbourne is definitely a place for me! On a recent visit to Melbourne I made it my goal to visit several of the markets in and around Melbourne. My first stop was the Queen Victoria Market.

The market can easily be accessed by Trams 19, 57, 58, or 59.

Open every day except Monday and Wednesday. There is a night market on Wednesday in Summer and Winter

Queen Victoria Market is a major tourist destination in Melbourne with more than 10 million visitors annually. I visited the market on a Thursday and it wasn’t too crowded. There are many foodie tours of the market that can be arranged through the market or directly with a tour guide. I chose to do a self-guided walk through the market, just stopping at anything that looked interesting and talking to the vendors.

The Meat and Fish Hall is comprised of row upon row of vendor booths selling all types of meat, poultry, fish, and seafood.

The hall also has a large selection of cheese, deli items and baked goods.

Most of the produce, flowers, clothing, shoes, jewellery and handmade arts and crafts can be found in the Sheds. The Sheds are located behind the Meat and Fish Hall. They are comprised of long aisles of vendors selling their wares.

The market also has a food hall with a number or ready to eat options. There is plenty of indoor seating and some outdoor picnic tables as well.

Although it can be quite touristy, if I lived in Melbourne, I would love to go to this market on a weekly basis to pick up fresh meat, seafood, and produce. I am looking forward to visiting this market again on a future visit!
